Temple Plate

We often offer our temples
the richest of harvests’ gifts:
a fatted calf, a hamper of cheese,
raspberries and Summer’s wines;
candles burn and incense clouds
crypts with scented smoke.

Your body is also a temple and –
the story goes –
if you don’t treat it just like one,
you’ll suffer a range of life’s blows:
depression might be on the menu,
and a probable painful death.

If you’ve only oak milk in the chiller,
and there’s no fat at all in your spread,
If you try not to eat any thing that you like
and you only eat low GI bread,
It’s no wonder your body, the temple,
is feeling a little bereft.
